Field Goal Drills: How to Make Solid Contact

Why Do I Need To Practice This?

If you struggle with kicking a football far, getting great height on your field goals, nice end-over-end rotation, or kicking accurately, then you likely need to work on perfecting your foot contact.

Did I cover every issue when kicking a football in the previous sentence? That is because foot contact is the key piece in separating the good kickers from the elite kickers.

I am not just blowing smoke here…have you ever watched a college or NFL kicker and noticed just how effortless they make kicking look and then see that they just crushed the ball? All because they are making near perfect contact with the ball.

Drill For Kicking Contact

I used this drill when I first started kicking all the way through the end of my college kicking days.  I say this because this drill is not just for beginners or the more advanced kickers.

Football Kicking Holder: ColossusContact is one aspect that you continuously improve and should not be left on the back burner once you start kicking the ball better.

The more you work on this drill and your foot contact, the more consistent you will become.  Now to the actual drill…as described in the video above, this drill will help you get the feel of solid contact.

To begin, set your plant foot about shoulder width from the pad. Simply pull your leg back (the backswing) and swing forward to kick the pad.

You want to hear a solid pop when making contact with the pad without your foot shaking or being unstable. Your ankle should remain locked through contact.

Ensure you are making contact with the sweetspot of your foot. Practice this repeatedly and you should notice a big difference in your field goal kicking.

The result of making solid foot contact will help you kick a football farther, higher, and more accurately. I promise, you will be pleasantly surprised when you begin making the correct foot contact.
