Pressure Field Goals Keep Coming: Week 13

A college football writer in Chicago recently tweeted something that has resonated recently given all these game winning efforts by kickers.

Nate Freese Game Winning 52 Yard Field GoalTom Fornelli tweeted, “Screw the Heisman.  Which one of these college kickers do we give the Groza to?”  With that statement, he is now our favorite college football writer 🙂

It seems that every other game in November is going down to the wire or at least ending with a field goal as the deciding factor.

Week 12 last week featured 12 kicking performances that sent teams to the locker room with a ‘W’ and the pace has slowed only slightly here in Week 13.

Yesterday, we counted 4 ‘last play of the game’ field goals to win games.

This is what is feels like if you are Nebraska’s Pat Smith….riding on the shoulders of your teammates after booting a 42 yarder to beat Penn State, well done!

Pat Smith Game WinnerHow about Nate Freese drilling a 52 yarder with a bunch of nothing on the clock for Boston College?

However, we also noted that Iowa’s win fell on the difference that a field goal made with 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter as well.

Also, even though UAB ended up losing to Rice in OT, UAB’s kicker kept things interesting with a game tying kick late in the fourth PLUS a 43 yarder to take the lead in OT.

How about Mark Hamilton for Villanova capping a 23 point 4th quarter run with 1 second on the clock?

We say ‘great job guys’ and share some pressure cooker kicks from around college football on Saturday:

  • Nate Freese (Boston College) | 52 Yarder | 00:00 to beat Maryland
  • Pat Smith (Nebraska) | 42 Yarder | 00:00 (OT) to beat Penn State
  • Stuart Williams (Wyoming) | 36 Yarder | 00:00 (OT) to beat Hawaii
  • Mike Meyer (Iowa) | 34 Yarder | 06:02 to beat Michigan
  • Ty Long (UAB) | 24 Yarder | 00:37 to force OT, then 43 yarder to take lead in OT
  • Mark Hamilton (Villanova) | 24 Yarder | 00:01 to cap a 4th quarter comeback over Delaware
  • John Fleck (Howard) | 20 Yarder 03:20 to force OT with Hampton (Howard won with 2nd OT TD)

Let us know if we missed any and we’ll add them to the list!
