Scratch Golfer Would Rather Kick

Bravo, Jack, nicely done.  You could’ve been playing college golf right now but you chose to kick footballs instead.  Why?

cbtthomas@comcast.netIt’s a decision most people wouldn’t understand unless ‘field goal kicker’ is embedded somewhere within their resume.

It’s called the game winning field goal, and the rush of the experience is one of a kind.

I get it, I’m one of many in the club.  My first game winner came in the 8th grade and I was hooked.

Then came two more in high school, six in college and three in the NFL.  Last minute game tying field goals are almost as fun, so let’s count one of those in college plus another in the NFL.

So yes, I know exactly why Kansas State’s kicker chose football over golf, though he made it pretty clear back in September.  Cantele stated, “you don’t golf before 55,000 people in the stands and millions of people behind the camera.”

Last night, he got to experience some of that magical stuff that makes kickers want to kick.  In fact TCU’s kicker was lighting it up too.  The two kickers accounted for a total of five field goals (zero misses), including a TCU 56 yarder with 2 minutes left, then a 41 yarder with 3 seconds on the clock to seal it for K-State.

So, four field goals on the night including the game winner, and it seems to me like Jack Cantele made a decision he’s already thrilled with.

I’m sure Kansas State is happy with Jack’s decision as well this morning.
